Is anyone looking to start a business? Might I suggest opening a restaurant in Austin that serves Southern CA style Mexican food? We just moved from San Diego to Austin about a month ago, and I keep running into Californians who lament the Tex-Mex food and lack of familiar Mexican food. Everyone I ask says that there is no food like this in Austin. With so many sad Californians here, surely a place that serves good refried pinto beans and good Mexican rice would do well?

I have been to the Bay Area and have had some not so great MX food experiences. Its truly mediocre there. I cant even imagine what its like in Austin.

Does anyone remember this video of the first In N Out opening in Dallas? You would think it was a food desert there.

You guys have San Antonio 1 hour south of you, its the most Mexican of US Cities along with El Paso and Los Angeles. Plenty of Mex food there, Reach out to the San Antonio thread. Although Mariscos and Fish Tacos are not as popular in South Texas as in the west coast and what we know as a Burrito in SoCal is a Super Taco in South Texas.

Hey O.P. think about the cool music scene and affordable housing in Austin.

You would think with all the slaughter houses in Texas that good burgers and burritos wouldn't be a problem.

When my friends from Texas visit me here, they get all baffled at the SD taco shops because they can't order a simple bean and cheese taco or carne guisada taco in a flour tortilla. Everything is in burrito form here. hahahaahah

You mean there's another way?

People rag on San Diego's Mexican food quality too, don't they?

Its all regional, when I am in Mexico City and I order a dish with a side of rice, its white as opposed to the red stuff that's eaten here in SD and in Texas. When I am Tijuana and I order a burrito its quite small compared to the ones in SD.

I wouldn't call one more authentic than the other, its just all regional.

Yeah that makes sense. I certainly wouldnt deny the local/regional authenticity. I was just wondering with that piece of wisdom your friends were so baffled to not get what they are used to getting in Austin.
I really have never seen those items here in TX.

I would love to take a quick culinary trip out to Austin to check out their styles.

But the Bay Area, regardless of locale, has some really inadequate MX food. JMHO and my limited experience taco shopping.
