A lot of people I know like Chevron's Credit Union...

They did my last loan at 2.75% fixed for for 15 years...

I was getting nowhere with the bank I do business with and going through the existing lender was a joke... by the time they had me approved... the rate had changed and they wanted about a point to do the loan I had applied.

Not everyone is eligible to joint Navy Federal, though.

This was our number one choice!

My husband is a combat war veteran. He was one of the first deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and in combat for 18 months straight. He is now rated 100% permanently disabled. Does he qualify for Navy Federal? Nope.

He does have a grandfather who is retired, but since he is not a member of Navy Federal (I think he's with USAA) we can't use him as our in.

If you join the San Diego Council, US Navy League for $50, you're then eligible to join Navy Federal.

Joining the US Navy League allows you to join Pen Fed and USAA but not Navy Fed... funny...

I have an account with USAA, and haven't worked for DOD since 1986. I started an account with PenFed, but closed it, because their customer service was so bad.

USAA [1-800-531-2265]

theyre your best choice for a VA loan, and its easy to join them so long as youre a Veteran or Military

plus their origination fee is only $695

are you kidding? I'm a contractor and use Navy Federal. Have you applied for their checking online? if you go that right I bet you get in, then you are in.

For general banking, I recommend USE Credit Union. I've had an account with them for 13 years and am pretty satisfied overall. I rarely go in person, but I've had excellent service at the branches in Chula Vista, Mission Valley, San Jose (now closed), and Berkeley. Their Saturday hours (until 4) can't be beat!

I have friends with accounts at North Island Credit Union, as did my mom for several years, but the branch staff never seem quite as helpful as the ones I encounter at USE. Nonetheless, my friends with NIFCU seem much happier than my friends with accounts at traditional banks. YMMV depending upon your exact banking needs.

The only San Diegan with a mortgage that I know well enough to know her mortgage info has it through BofA, and it's been an absolute nightmare for her. Definitely shop around.
