I've lived in several states, been to all but 2, and lived in Florida for 16 years, and it is NO WAY, near as expensive as CA. Plus it doesn't have state income tax. You could EASILY! find a decent 2 bedroom for around $750. I did in very uppity Naples, 2bd 2bth for $799 and the complex had 2 pools and a boat ramp on site!

Not to get personal but it sounds like you are eliminating some places based on emotion instead of logic (pacific vs atlantic, TX for personal reasons) TX cheaper than CA, lived there too.

Good luck, It does sound like a new start is what your family needs but with what sounds like your very limited resources maybe CA isn't the place to be 'winging it'.
