Where is most of the jobs in SD, downtown?

Where is the best place to start when looking for a job?

Is there a state employment agency in SD? If so, is it worth anything or a waste of time?

What kind of work do you do? And no, there isn't a state employment agency here in SD. There is no best place to start looking for a job, it just depends on the type of work that you do.

No; most of the jobs are not downtown; they are all over the city/county. SD downtown isn't really the hub of anything. Most of the population does not work downtown. It's not like other cities, especially east coast and midwest metros. It's a spread out series of suburbs. Web design work could be anywhere-UTC, Sorrento Valley, north county, etc. Look at the online job sites for web design openings/listings in san diego, as a starting place.

Irmsd, thanks for this. It really changes my perspective. Actually, it is not me that is moving there but my son. We both live overseas and although he is American, he left the U.S. when he was 1 year old. He speaks English as a second language and wants to attend City College as a part time student to study and improve his English skills.

One person suggested Hillcrest and South Park. What would really help is a location where he could start out getting around on foot or even bicycle and then eventually get a car. Or is SD a town where you really should have a car?

Awesome board!

If he wants to be within walking distance of City College he could live downtown.

If he lived uptown (North Park, Normal Heights, University Heights, Golden Hill, South Park), he could take a bus directly downtown, and there's a discounted student bus pass. What is his rental budget?

$660 - $800 is what we are aiming for. But I am assuming as a room in a house or apartment. In other words to share. I don't imagine there is an entire apartment available, or even studio at that price, right?

What is it like busing around town? Another idea would be to put him further away where rentals get cheaper and buy a car, if that is practical.

$660 will get him a room in a house. $800 will get him a studio/1 br, uptown, but not downtown.

Living uptown (North Park, Normal Heights, University Heights, Golden Hill, South Park), he could take a bus directly downtown, and there's a discounted student bus pass. Check out Craigslist for rentals in these areas, and post them for comments.

moved, thanks for your input. Just out of curiosity, what would it cost for a room or a studio/1 br downtown? And is it all in high rises?

Could you tell me a little about life downtown compare to uptown?

Downtown is mostly high rises, and the cost varies from building to building. Check out Craigslist for rentals. Life downtown vs uptown just depends on the location.
