I just killed a Black Widow and her nest of eggs in Heavenly Bamboo clump. She was located about 3 feet off the ground just a couple feet from where we park our cars! It's a shady spot but none the less, VERY scary to think that they are not limited to dark corners and other places one would assume to find them.

Another, perhaps more likely, spot I found one a few weeks ago was inside my watering can. She came out angry as I filled it up and gave me a few extra grey hairs because I couldn't find and kill her once she jumped out.

I'm only sharing this as a warning for those of you with gardens and maybe kids playing in them kids so you'll be mindful. Also, another place they love is under lawn chairs if they are out all night and they will crawl up under chair and table covers.

Terro Spider spray seems to work and is good for getting up under things and into crevasses - but NONE if the sprays I've tried kill them instantly, so stay away because they curl up and "play dead" before they really are. Best to smash them with a shoe if you can.

I'm hearing about Brown Widows that are supposedly more aggressive, but i've not seen one yet.

No, it is not rare to see them. Yes, it is rare to actually be bitten by one.

I should have titled this post "sighted in a rare location." Thanks for the reminder that bites are rare.

The more inland you go...the more spiders there are.

Scariest place we see them are right under the coping on our pool. You know, right where you put your hand to hold onto the side! And they are aggressive little buggers! We keep a can of the Terro Spider Spray...but your right, a well placed shoe is better!

Brown Widows aren't as poisonous as Black Widows.

We had a black widow in our house before. Ontario, CA like 25 years ago. Had some toys outside. Brought them inside and the black widow hitched a ride inside that way. Found the spider in our bedroom. Also found tons of black widows in the garage and attic.

Black widows are more active in the heat, and you will even occasionally see them building webs in the open when it gets really hot. We had a couple here last summer that did that. They are not at all aggressive, and you have to really harry one to get them to bite you. Just be aware of putting your hands anyplace they might be, which in this season means dark nooks and crannies outside.

Spraying terro kills everything, including the helpful spiders, so that's something to keep in mind.

We get a lot of black widows around our house--their webs are obvious and easy to spot luckily. Since I have 2 young kids, I will go out at night, when I notice a new widow web, with a flashlight and can of clear adhesive spray and kill them--the spray is fast and dries clear, and 95% of the time kills them (they are stuck of course)...very large ones sometimes manage to get away even coated with the glue.

Well, I have...and I've been giving them a pass, because I thought they were harmless. After I looked them up, no more pass.
