I have never been, but a good friend told me about this place a couple of weeks ago. He bought a season pass for his 3 year old and 8 year old. He says they enjoyed so much they felt the season pass would be worth it.

Weekends yes. Weekdays you will find parking in the lots or on the street easily.

Besides the model train museum, there's a small ride-on train just south of the zoo. Your 2-year-old might enjoy that, too.

If the Padres were playing, that would be a good place to hang out for a few hours...even if your not a Padres fan it's a nice stadium.

I don't believe they'd be playing in the first week of March, would they?

I assume the ocean is pretty cold in March, so if we went to the beach it'd be mostly just about the kids playing in the sand.

Any good hikes in the San Diego area along the coast that aren't too difficult?

So I guess there aren't a lot of good healthy eating options in the downtown area from the lack of responses. I came across a couple salad places that we may try, but not much else.

A lot of people use Yelp, you may want to do a search there for the type of food you're looking for.

Salads...most restaurants will have salads and since gluten free seems to be the new trend/epidemic, most places have gluten free items on the menu.

Here is a yelp list of DT delis that might help you out.

Best sandwich shop Downtown, San Diego, CA.
