Looking around at places in the Mission Valley and Pacific Beach area on Zillow and pretty much every place, whether its a home or townhouse in a complex, says no pets. Out here in OC, not only can you have pets in almost every place around the beach, you can bring them to any outdoor mall and many stores. SD doesn't appear to be very pet friendly at all, sucks.

Could it be because we OCers love dogs (just not pits) and you see them everywhere here? I just got back from Peet's having coffee with friends and tons of dogs breeds all around. I think many owners here in OC will rent to people with dogs and simply agree on a slightly higher rate. In SD, I don't know what the deal is.

Because there are a lot of irresponsible pet owners who have ruined it for the responsible pet owners. They don't take care of their dogs, there is alot of property damage, and landlords have gotten stricter.

Dogs are everywhere is San Diego though, especially in central SD and the beach areas.

San Diego is extremely dog friendly. Many stores and restaurants cater to them. Most restaurants give our dog a bowl of water before we are ever served. Most are even coming up with doggie menus.
Not familiar with rentals.....

We were at a Subaru dealership the other day, and they have doggie bowls and treats--inside, in the sales office area! Now that's dog friendly!

The rental situation is the same most other places. If you read the forums of various states, you'll find that many people can't find rentals if they have pets. OC may be an aberration.

Don't just look at the "umbrella" websites like Apartments.com, because they're not always accurate about this sort of thing. If you see a "no pets" vacancy that otherwise appeals to you, make sure you also check out the website for the property management company which is responsible for the particular complex you are interested in.

Thanks but Im not looking at apartments, Im looking at homes and townhouses. Whether is a landlord or rental company, most every listing says no pets. Puzzling considering several have said they see dogs everywhere and SD is dog friendly. I don't get it, I find it very hard to believe all these people who own dogs also own their homes.

A lot of them allow a small pet with fee. Try Trulia.com, search pet friendly. I'd say half will allow it. Try around Ocean Beach area for larger dogs allowed, because of the local dog beach more rentals allow a pet.
