We are a young family with grade school children... Here's what I'm needing! Commute isn't an issue as my husband has a home office. We need to know the best public schools & communties for young families! We are looking to rent and would like to stay between 3-4k a month. I'm trying to figure out schools... Charter? Magnet? Private? We have bright kids & we'd like a solid academic school with great teachers...but, It's more the atmosphere we are looking for! We are leaving a great school behind where it has a family and deep community feel & want to give our kids that if possible.
Any ideas?? I've looked at Carmel Mountain, Carlsbad, Encinitas, La Jolla...

My kids went to elementary in Encinitas Union School District, and La Costa Canyon High. They are good schools. But they are California schools so they are not supported in the way I was used to when we lived back east.

I'm assuming at 3 to 4k per month you could rent a single family home. You're looking into some good neighborhoods, there are others. I'd look closely at the specific schools you would be relying on as they vary greatly, and most require parents to pay for lots of the extras that schools used to provide - such as transporting your kids to and from school.

Yes, budget for rent would be 3,000-4,000 per month. Looking to rent, not buy. Gates communities?? The best schools? Friendly people!! Ideas??

You'll definitely want to look into the Carmel Valley area. The grade schools are split between the Del Mar USD and Solana Beach USD school districts. These are the best in the county. Middle and high school are with the San Dieguito Union High School District. Also some of the best schools in the county. In general it's a great area for raising kids. There's a plethora of athletic and non-athletic activities for kids. Home rental will likely be closer to the $4000/month range.

If commuting is not an issue I would look at areas like Carlsbad, Scripps Ranch, Poway that are on the bad end of the commuting stick but are still nice and somewhat more affordable.

Are you on a temporary situation? Why not buy a home with that large a budget? Pay yourself in equity.
