Here are suggestions:

Get tickets to see the new museum, The Broad. While there, see the Disney Symphony next door. Across the street is the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Once done here, go to the Getty OR go to Griffith Observatory. If you have kids, consider going to the La Brea Tar Pits - awesome fossil location. It'll be hard to get all this done in one day, so consider what is important to you.

There is so much to love in LA. I would leave Encinitas super early, like no later than 5 AM, and take the 73 in South OC when you are here (worth the money even with low traffic, it's amazingly scenic and cuts you to the 405 sooner). I would eat breakfast in LA.

WRONG FORUM DUMMY!!! Oh wait, its you bloom. LOL.
Like 'Mr Orange County' (sorry L-SOC, that one from the other day made me laugh) mentions I would spend it at and around Griffith Park, this is where I usually take my out of town guests for the LA Day Trip from San Diego. Here one can easily burn a few hours:

  • Visiting the Observatory
  • Seeing the Hollywood sign and LA Skyline
  • Hike around Griffith Park
  • Visit the LA Zoo
  • Easily drive down to Hollywood Blvd for dinner afterwards and to buy tacky souvenirs

As far as outdoor stuff, the weather should be nice, so take a walk around Santa Monica Pier or Venice Beach, grab some lunch and maybe rent a boat in Marina del Rey (Fisherman's Village on Fiji) and take a harbor cruise.

I really enjoyed the museum of Jurassic Technology the last time I was in LA. It's not too far from Venice and very well done.

I ending up staying at home with sick child and went to Balboa Park and read on the front porch - oh the horror. But the Observatory and the Broad Museum are great ideas for next time.
