Single, 25 year old male. Visited SD for a over a year ago for a wedding, and have been planning to move here ever since.

I'm looking to spend around $1700 for a studio or small 1 bedroom apartment, and La Jolla seems ideal for me, assuming I can afford it. I've looked on various sites and there does seem to be apartments in that range in the area.

I was hoping people more familiar with SD could help shed some light on my decision. With my budget, does it make sense to live in LJ? I want to live by the beach, in an neighborhood with other young professionals.

If so, which parts of LJ should I consider? If not, where else in SD should I be looking? I don't know where I'll be working yet, but the neighborhood/proximity to the beach is more important to me than my commute.

Thanks!

My suggestion is to line up a job first, increase your savings, and then think about moving. How much do you have saved for a move without a job lined up?

Thanks for the input - I'm looking forward to moving, but will obviously wait to have a job lined up. Hoping to go back to a Big 4 accounting firm after working at one in NYC for two years, still in the same industry but different job.

Where do you live in NYC? That might help us make suggestions.

How "close to the beach" do you want to be? Walking distance? A 15 minute drive?

The "beach" nightlife for a 25 year old will be in Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, or Ocean Beach, not La Jolla. And, at $1700 a month, you'll probably find slim pickings within walking distance of any beach in La Jolla.

Although you say you don't care about commute time, every 15 minutes spent commuting is 15 minutes taken away from beach time. So, it does matter.

Good luck with your job search.

Not sure La Jolla is the best place for a single professional guy to be. You'll probably meet more people in your demographic living downtown or in little italy. La Jolla is old rich people and families. Living by the beach consider Pacific Beach or OB. Frankly beaches are mostly a 15 min drive away from most places.

Apartments under $1,700 in La Jolla CA

Just to give you an idea of what you may find in La Jolla in your price range, check out the above link. But the others are correct in telling you that Pacific, Mission and Ocean Beaches are more geared to the younger crowd.

Now, if you'd prefer to go party but be in a quieter area for actual living, then La Jolla might work for you. That's something you'd have to decide. And, of course, much will depend on if and where you get a job.

The OP has decided to wait to move until he has a job lined up, and more savings. Read post #3.

I read this a couple of weeks ago, and wanted to comment.

There are plenty of people out here in the mid 20s age range, so you should like it and adjust fast. La Jolla is beautiful, but probably not where you'd want to be at 25 and single. I would look at Pacific Beach, North Park, Hillcrest, or a neighborhood around there as opposed to one further north. If you work in La Jolla, the commute shouldn't be too bad from these areas. If you have a budget of $1700, there should be options but those will go quick. Good Luck!
