Came down with a kidney stone on the plane coming into SD 2 months ago. What a vacation. Still paying the hospital bill for them taking an ultrasound and telling me to see a doctor back in Milwaukee. Plus it stormed. Hmpf.

Anyway, this time it's gonna be better! I am coming with my 95 year old father (WW2 vet) so let me know if there is anything I am missing to do. We have 6 days.

La Jolla - bike and or kayak. Electric assist bike is perfect for gramps. See the seals too.
Sunset cliffs
Cabrillo national monument
Midway museum
biking near mission beach and dog beach
Zoo (safari ride)
seaworld - probably not
Balboa park

Not sure if we gotta come back from time to time for naps so all day excursions are probably out

What am I missing? We only have 6 days.

Thanks

Since your gramps is a vet, any interest in a variety of tributes in SD for the sacrifice and service of that generation ?

A big event that your dad might like is the Planes of Fame Air Show in Chino on Saturday 5/4 and Sunday 5/5. They are commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day this year with lots of great demonstrations by historic aircraft and a discussion by a panel of WWII vets. But it's about a 2-hour drive from SD.

Miramar Marine Corp Air Station has a free static display of planes & helicopters from different eras;
Flying Leatherneck museum - https://flyingleathernecks.org/

You can also drop into one of the *many* SD famous craft beer breweries on Miramar Rd after visiting the museum.

I'd also include a trip out to Torrey Pines State Beach; you'll have to pay for parking, but drive to the top, drop into the mini museum at the top, then walk some of the flatter trails for a great ocean view.

Another great veteran tribute would be to drive to the top of Mt Soledad close to La Jolla - it has a National Veterans Memorial at the top with fantastic vistas of the SD area

When you go out to Cabrillo, be sure to drive through Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. As the wife, daughter and daughter in law of veterans, it's very moving, and the views alone are worth the quick drive through on the way out to Cabrillo.

Since you have La Jolla on your list, some great stops while you're in that area are:

Torrey Pines Gliderport. I always take out of town visitors to the Torrey Pines Gliderport. It's awesome to watch the gliders take off over your head and soar along the tall cliffs, and it is absolutely free. It's an amazing place to watch the sunset (I think it is is nicer than Sunset cliffs myself), but there is also a small, casual restaurant on the cliff that can be fun for lunch while you watch the gliders take off. See the following links:

https://lajollamom.com/torrey-pines-gliderport/

https://www.flytorrey.com/

Salk Institute - free, and an incredible piece of architecture to visit; it's right next door to the Gliderport. Tours are available (and great) but I like to just walk in and explore on my own. Doesn't take long to see. https://www.salk.edu/

Stuart Collection at UCSD -- sculptures on the UC SD campus. Fun to walk around and enjoy both the art and the campus. https://lajollamom.com/uc-san-diego-...ollection-art/

Mount Soledad veterans memorial - One of the best views in San Diego.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute. Skip Seaworld. If you want to see marine life up close, this is a much better experience, in my opinion. https://aquarium.ucsd.edu/

Also, if you have a car, you might consider taking a break from the coast and taking a drive into San Diego's beautiful mountains. Julian, a little town in the mountains, is a good destination. Along the way, you can stop at a few wineries in Ramona. And, the wildflowers are starting to bloom in the mountains too.

I like to do this drive this way: I-8 to Rt. 79 north (this will take you through Rancho Cuyamaca State Park and past Cuyamaca Lake) to Julian. Then, from Julian, take 78 through Ramona (wineries on this route). Take 67 to Poway Road, which will take you to I-15 freeway and back to San Diego.

Finally, You probably have already discovered the San Diego County Tourism site, but just in case, I'll give you the link. You can find discounts and deals on a lot of SD attractions there, as well as a host of information and other ideas about things to see and do in the San Diego area:

Yes! This is a must do. The Guy Fleming Trail is fairly flat and easy to walk, and worth every step. But if you stop in at the museum, the rangers will be happy to give you other ideas. A walk along the beach below the cliffs is also beautiful.

Torrey Pines is five minutes from the Gliderport, by the way.

I would suggest getting more recommendations for food places that suit your tastes. Given that you're traveling with a 95 year old, finding interesting and comfortable places to eat and drink (with comfortable seating!) between walks and trips will make your father's trip easier.

My dad, a Vietnam Vet, really liked the Mt Soledad War Memorial.

He also enjoyed a ride on the SD bay on one of the excursion boats as the captain thanked him for his service (he was wearing his Vietnam Vet hat). If you are lucky and on one of the evening boat rides, you will catch Taps playing in the evening when you near Point Loma.

He did not, however, like when I took him to Ft Rosecrans Cemetery despite the view. He half jokingly said he would be spending eternity in a military cemetery so I didn't need to bring him there .
