I am considering a move to San Diego and would like some advice from people who have actually lived there or do currently live there. I've visited briefly before but its not the same as living there. I want to know in general what to expect before I move. The main thing that attracts me to SD is the weather and outdoor opportunities it has to offer. The negatives are the lack of jobs along with the high cost of living. I'm out of college and have the money saved up to move and am thinking this might be the place to start a career. For the people that moved to SD, what is some advice you wish someone would have given you before you moved? Do you still live there, if not do you want to move back? Whats a good area for someone like myself to live in? Whats a good way to go about looking for jobs, or is this something that can only be done once in SD? Is this place over hyped or is it really worth living there?

You're on the NYC board as well. I'm from San Diego. It's financially hard too. I'm not sure what hype San Diego has surrounding it..but if you're not into beaches, nice weather, and blondies..don't go lol

I'm actually trying to decide between CA and NY. I prefer the outdoor lifestyle that SD and California have to offer as well as the weather. But the job markets are like comparing night and day. I take it you aren't a fan of SD?

I'm from San Diego. I live in NYC right now. I came because the job market was better here for me (as I do NOT have my degree yet)...but now...forget about it. It SUCKS. Being that you have a degree...you may have a better advantage. One thing is, in NYC you don't have to buy a car...you get EVERYWHERE on the train..and believe me..you are outdoors here all the time lol

I grew up in the NY suburbs and have lived in SD for 15 years. I like SD very much, but it is not NY, and it is not perfect.

You move to SD for the lifestyle, period. If your career is important to you, forget SD, move NYC, or to LA if you want sunshine.

The SD job market is limited at best, low-paying at worst, and often full-of underachieving, ambitionless people trying their best to scratch out a middle-class lifestyle in a very expensive city.

The exception is if you are in one of the following fields:
- biotech / biomed / biosciences
- High Tech Engineering R&D (particularly wireless, RF, medical imaging, etc)
- Hospitality / Tourism

These responses scare me, a little. I am currently deciding between San Diego and the Tampa area.
The job market is important to me as well as beaches.
I have two kids, 13 and 4. I am close to my paralegal degree and then am going after my psychology degree.
Currently in Colorado, HATE IT, need to get out, reasons that don't need to be discussed however one is HORRIBLE job market and no room for great career, in the Springs anyway.
So, is it really not worth it? To come to San Diego?
Thanks

I have a friend who is a paralegal, he makes 50k here. A nice house in an area with good schools will cost you 600k. Is it worth it? That depends on what you are looking for. I think it is, but only if you can afford it. Think hard!

You'll admit that this is conjecture, won't you?

Sd is expensive so what. A lot of places are. the things that one needs to know is how far are you willing to push yourself if it gets tough at first. I know that moving to SD will be very hard but who said things in life are easy. i live in RIC VA and the COL is relatively low here. I can afford to be lazy as hell a bunch. But I personally am looking for more in life than a decent house and job security. There are plenty of ways to stay afloat if you try.
