The Thunderboat races are back at Mission Bay this weekend (Sept 19 - 21).

This is a great annual event!

You can either pay admission to watch it up close, or you can watch it for free from Crown Point or from the Ingraham St bridge.

I recommend bringing a camera or video camera, binoculars, and possibly a beach chair.

There is also a large pond near Ingraham St where they race miniature remote-controlled thunderboats. It's directly across from the Ingraham St entrance to the main races.

Damn! That's the same weekend as the annual Route 66 carshow in San Bernardino. I'd totally check that out if it weren't that weekend...

The boat races are happening right now on Mission Bay!!!

If you've never been there, they are racing some of the fastest boats in the world.

The Hydroplanes can travel over 200 mph, and kick up a tail fan of water around 50 feet high and 100 feet long. It's an awesome sight!!!

There will also be a fireworks display tonight.

Not everything went smooth at the Thunderboat show this weekend.

Check out the video at this website:

digtriad.com | Triad, NC | Watercooler News | AMAZING VIDEO: Man Lucky To Be Alive After Boat Crash (http://www.digtriad.com/news/watercooler/article.aspx?storyid=111154&catid=176 - broken link)

Hard to believe that the driver came out of that crash with just a few scrapes?

I was there Saturday afternoon, and I saw a drag racing boat that sank right near the starting line at Crown Point. Only the nose end of the boat was sticking out of the water. They couldn't get the boat out of the water, so they just left it there, and then continued with the races.
