I have been following this special ongoing series on KPBS about gangs in the county. I thought I would share this with you all and see what you take away from it.
I was pretty surprised at some of the statistics as it related to the different cities in the county. Of course, these are statistics and their origins seem kind of skewed.

We are considering moving from Tennessee to San Diego and starting to think it might not be such a good idea. Between the cancer clusters in Carlsbad to this gang activity and higher taxes, are we crazy? Should we just stay put where we are? Maybe the California we thought we knew is not any longer??

Its pretty easy to read into stories like the gangs and cancer clusters. I dont know if you meant to generalize San Diego as fully representing California as a whole, but every county is different, every city is different. Its very very easy and tempting to turn on your computer and read stories that play into fears to make conclusions in the comfort of your home.

I would go out on a limb here and say that a good majority of the regular posters (myself included) on this board enjoy living here and only toss out caution signs and tips to folks that have specific questions about anything they can contribute to.

I live in the highest gang area on that map (mid-city San Diego) and can tell you that while it ain't perfect, we have pretty much zero issues with gang activity in our neighborhood (a mile away is another story). Unless you are a drug dealer or user, or a gang member, gangs are really not much of an issue in San Diego. Personally I think that infrastructure issues like education & transportation are much bigger problems in CA.

You have to realize that California is big and spread out, and there are areas where problems are deep and out-in-the-open, but there are also many nice areas with none of those problems.

I live in mid-city too. No gang problems that I am aware of in my neighborhood except the occasional graffiti. More likely to hear some neighbors complain about nosiy SDSU students, though we have none on our street and I never hear them. Just a bunch of nice neighbors, mostly older, who are friendly and kind to each other. Love living here.

Mid-City here, also, and I don't know why, but I just don't see gangs anywhere these days. I'm sure they are out there, but they're not very visible. Could it be that some of those punk kids that I see are actual gang members? If so, call me naive, but they don't scare me at all.
