Thinking about moving to Mission Beach, But keep hearing from different people that it has a lot of crime and violence, and a problem with gangs. Are They Right?

Thanks!

It's not as bad as some people make it out to be and seems a lot better than 5 or more years ago. Most crime seems to be small like theft and violent crime is pretty rare. There are not gangs that live in the area but there has been some gang related crime in the past, but its rare. Overall MB is a fine place to live, it's not crime infested but not the safest either.

Well, it is a high crime area, but not in the "bad neighborhood" sense. The crime is mostly due to alcohol and tourists. But also Mission Beach attracts a LOT of gang members from elsewhere in the city and CA who like to hang out there. Full-on gang BBQ's and family reunions are pretty routine in Belmont park on the east side of Mission Blvd. Occasionally those guys get drunk and wander around.

Personally the only place I would live would be the south end of MB, away from Belmont Park and north which is where all the problems tend to happen.

I kind of like the most southern part of MB.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The part of MB i would be living would be 4 blocks north of Belmont Park Along the beach side. My only main concern would be my girlfriend and i leaving for work early in the morning (530sih) and coming home late on the weekends.

Should be fine as long as you use common sense.

Wasn't there a big beach riot on Mission Beach two years ago, which led to the subsequent ban of alcohol on the beach, and most beaches in San Diego County?

To the OP:It's pretty "crime-friendly" when compared to other parts of the County.Lots of gangs go there esp in the Summer and Winter months just to chill but gang culture soon takes over the chilling aspect. The "beach areas"(OB,PB,MB) are some of the few places I watch my back more than I normally would, park my car near the street or in the light so there's an extra set of eyes on it,and I am ready for battle just in case;a few of my friends have been in street fights out there.BTW most of the other fighters where not drunk, just out to cause problems or thugs.

My gym is in Mission Beach and I go there at least 4 days a week riding down the Boardwalk to Belmont Park where my gym is. It is FINE and not bad at all, there are minorities in the area which can scare some people but I have never seen a problem there. All the "gang" looking people picnicking in the park are fine and don't cause trouble from what I have seen. Everyone is just having a good time enjoying the day at the beach. "Dangerous" and "ghetto" are relative terms and it's quite obvious from the reactions of some San Diegan's to parts of this city that are not that bad at all. I seriously wonder how much time some of the posters in here commenting actually spend in MB.
