Sarcasm is not much appreciated here at all, or they just don't get it. I've been in SD a long long time yet I've never become a San Diegan and don't want to really. I make the best of it for sure but it's shortcomings are obvious if this isn't how you naturally are.

Another way you can tell that SD really isn't all it's cracked up to be is the fact that weather is at the top of the list when positives are spoken about. That means there isn't much else to offer. Beaches? Not unique, many places around the world have those. Hawaiians must laugh at SD when we talk about our beaches. The zoo? I've been to 4 different zoo on the west coast, a zoo is a zoo after a while. You see pretty much the same animals with each zoo specializing in a certain area but that's it. Sea World? There are two others that are bigger and nicer. So where does that leave us? What's really unique?

And as far as this so called perfect weather is concerned; Everyday you hear people say stuff like, "it's hot today", It's cold today", Why is it so windy?", "what's with this cloudiness?". For a place that has perfect weather they sure gripe about it a lot lol.

Ha, Now I will wait for the angry SD defenders in 3...2...1
Hey I'm with you Gentoo and Mak802. I think all those things myself and had to deal with major culture shock when I moved here 2 years ago. I am originally from Los Angeles, so I didn't think it would be so different but culturally it is very different.

So why do San Diegans allways act like San Diego is the greatest thing? Really even the media there are always praising this place turn on the news and the first thing you here is Americas finest city, Beats me.
I've brought this up before too and heard an earful from the "defensive and judgmental" type that mini_cute referred to. Just wait, I'm sure one or more of them will be by here shortly to "put us in our place" lol.

It's very different from LA. I'm originally from the Bay Area and thought that SD would be like LA too. It isn't at all. I like people from LA actually. Many of my closest friends and a few girlfriends were from LA. If I could not like in the Bay Ara again or in Seattle, LA would be my choice. It feels more...well.."normal" to me.

San Diego isn't perfect but it is really fine for a lot of reasons. The city has two great stadiums for baseball & football that people from LA can get to by train. Beaches, esp around La Jolla are gorgeous & the water is fairly clear for a metro region. Good surfing & lots of water sports. You can hike in the foothills or bike ride everywhere. For such a large city, San Diego is laid-back & easy going. It is true that the male population is way larger than females but that is because it is a military town. Because so many Navy people live in San Diego it is more conservative than other large cities in California but it voted for Obama so it can't be too conservative.

The San Diego zoo & Balboa Pk are incredible. The zoo is the best I have ever seen. San Diego has some beautiful neighborhoods w/ palm trees everywhere and lush gardens all year long. The climate is so mild that there really isn't any season except spring [though it is hot just a few miles away from the ocean].

Yeah, it is so cold in San Diego that people put socks on with their flip-flops on winter mornings!

and to be fair, and I've mentioned this before, SD isn't as conservative as it once was. still behind other west coast cities and many on the east coast but it's changing.

OK those are the nice things SD have but LA has it's own baseball teams and other sports teams why would they go to San Diego for sports? And also the zoo is just a zoo I never got what the big whoop was about SD's zoo the same smelly and stinky animals in any zoo.

Or for that matter, LA has it's own beaches and foothills and real mountains that are actually closer. No mountains in in Southern Ca. can compete with the San Gabriels.

Isn't there like a 40 mile long trail that goes from Sante Fe Dam to the beach?

SD has a professional baseball team??? Could've fooled me!

I've been to zoos in most major cities all over the country, and have to say my personal favorite is and always will be the Bronx Zoo. Easy to get around, relatively flat, and their conservation program is wonderful. I too don't get the hype about this zoo.

And as far as the weather goes, I love how people claim it's warm all year long. My friends came to visit in January, April and July and couldn't believe how cold it was. In January, we were in coats and sweatpants and definitely not on the beach. The one that came in April was pissed off because she came all the way from the East coast with her kids, and people on a travel board told her it's shorts weather, so she ended up having to go shopping for clothes. In July, we didn't see the sun til around 1pm, thanks to the wonderful marine layer that seems to have lasted from April to July this past season. I had to take my friend to Vegas for a couple of days, because she was looking forward to heat and SD simply did not have it in July. And now, I'm wearing boots and jeans and long sleeves because it is not exactly warm out there. So I guess our definitions of perfect weather differ greatly.

And sure, we have beaches, but try going swimming without a wetsuit. I was freezing even in August and have really not enjoyed the water here at all because it's so damn cold all the time. The seaweed is disgusting and all over the beaches, and that's all you see when you take a picture of the beach. It attracts flies that are all over you and the seaweed. Kinda disgusting if you ask me.

And the restaurants...I won't start a rant, but if you're looking for quality food, I hope you like Mexican cause that's the only thing they got right around here!
