I moved to Santa Rosa recently, after living in CO for 28 years and in Boulder part of that time. Santa Rosa is not as sophisticated as Boulder, not as many Yuppies(if that term is even used anymore) but it is about the same size, has a junior college at least and the surrounding areas are just as beautiful. The real estate is almost the sam eprice point, and I think the weather is less extreme here (so far).
Nothing will compare to the Flatirons in Boulder but we are pretty happy with this choice-and it's very family oriented; good schools esp. on the est side-lots of volunteer parents, etc.

I agree about the Cali thing. No one who is a California native calls it Cali, no one.

Walnut Creek is a good choice for East Bay Locales. I think Santa Cruz is far more liberal than Boulder. Granted I only have spent about 6 weeks total in Boulder in my life.
