Lots of older retired and dual income couples... really not a lot of social interaction from my perspective as would be in a neighborhood with lots of children to bring neighbors together.

Sequoya has not escaped Foreclosures

I don't really remember it ever being a walking neighborhood... car needed for shopping and just about everything else...

Cul-de-sacs tend to be more social...

Nice, 50's and 60's upscale homes for the period and most are well maintained...

Tranquil is how I would best describe Sequoya

Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, Danville, and plenty of other higher end East Bay neighborhoods are all MUCH better than Sequoyah.

It really depends on what you are looking for from your living situation. What types of amenities would you like to be close to? What job centers will you commute to? What types of commuting options make the most sense for you? What community features are crucial for you?

Walnut Creek/Pleasanton/Danville/San Ramon are all pleasant places but they are far from SF.... if that's important to you. They are also quintessential American suburban areas with standard shopping malls/strip malls/big box stores. Both Pleasanton and Walnut Creek have popular "main street" areas with restaurants/boutiques and so on. Walnut Creek's downtown area is pretty expansive. Danville is a bit more limited in terms of commercial stuff, although Blackhawk, the neighboring town has a mall with a car museum! The attitudes of people in the communities above are different, on the whole compared with areas with similar home prices in Oakland. And they are less diverse. So really it is up to you. We don't know much about your criteria for choosing a home, and could steer you more accurately if you fill us in on the soft requirements.

Well, I work in richmond and my fiance works in SF downtown. So we want to be somewhere close to the city. Our families are also in San Francisco. We prefer something quiet, diverse, yet close to the city. Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, and Danville are too far.

lower rockridge near bart would be best if you have someone working in downtown sf
trestle glen/crockerhighlands would also be a good choice
both are safe walkable neighborhoods

Rockridge is a really nice part of Oakland, very walkable and it's 20 minutes from downtown SF on BART. As long as you aren't next to the BART station or the highway it's pretty quiet on the residential streets. It has a real neighborhood feel to it that I never got when I lived in San Francisco for 6 years, people in Rockridge say hi to you on the street and on Halloween there were lots of kids with their parents going around trick or treating, and there were some block parties where they'd block off the street and every house would have a haunted house thing going on and people were standing around chatting and eating food. College Ave is the main shopping strip and it's always busy. Driving up to Richmond might be kind of a drag though, 580 north from 24 always seems packed in the morning. Might be good to look at Albany and North Berkeley which are closer to Richmond but not too far from SF, Rockridge is definitely closer to SF though.

Is there a lot of crime in Sequoyah? Is it relatively safe compared to the rest of oakland? Good place to raise a family?

Very pretty, very green. Pretty safe.
