Hi, We're moving from New York and thinking of looking in Fremont, as it seems an affordable alternative to the Peninsula (but still within commuting distance of our new jobs). From what I've read elsewhere, it doesn't seem like there's much of a downtown, but are there any neighborhoods that do have something of a community feel and maybe a little charm?

We're a couple with a baby (and dog) looking for rentals around $2000. (Other question: What can we realistically expect to get in these neighborhoods for this amount?)

Thanks everyone! (And thank god for these forums---so helpful.)

Fremont is a family oriented community, generally speaking. Niles is quaint and Irvington does have a somewhat small town feel. I lived near the area of Stevenson and Paseo Padre (near Lake Elizabeth) and it was perfectly fine. We were close to Downtown and it was convenient (close to BART, restaurants, banks and shops). But, Downtown Fremont is rather boring compared to, say Downtown Mountain View or Los Gatos.

You will be able to get a 2 bed/2 bath townhouse or apartment for this amount and possibly, even a small house (maybe 3 bed, 2 bath).

For areas, the Southern side of Fremont and towards the hills (680) is better, but you would be hard pressed to find something for a family for 2K in those areas. The areas bordering Union City are probably the areas of Fremont I would stay out of.
