Chicago wants to turn its "Uptown" into a theater/entertainment district.
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/4...sic-mecca.html

There are bringing in experienced experts:

Quote:
The Broadway-Lawrence intersection in Uptown is included within another TIF district, but Mickelson says he’s not yet applied for funds to assist in the Uptown Theatre restoration.
....
Mickelson may have finally assembled the team to save the crumbling theater.

“He’s brought in some folks from Oakland [Calif.] who know how to do this, and have done this, and have a track record,” Smith said last week. “I’m extremely optimistic.”
Oakland's beginning to get a reputation....

I lived in Uptown in Chicago for about 6 months in 2003 before moving to SF. Pretty dumpy area, lots of shady characters. Very diverse for the North Side but more crime than other areas too. Lots of really beautiful old theaters that had fallen into disrepair. The Green Mill, the birthplace of the poetry slam (for better or worse) is there and was a neat place to see jazz or poetry. It's about 5 miles north of downtown Chicago so it doesn't have the proximity that Uptown in Oakland has to urban bustle and new condos. They built a Borders there a few years ago that was supposed to make Uptown reborn but I bet they're closing it now that Borders is closing a lot of stores.

You are spot on - Uptown's Borders is indeed closing it's doors following liquidation. All I can say is, good luck Mayor... IMO you have much bigger fish to fry than renovating Uptown.

That is so interesting.

Maybe we can borrow some of Chicago's vast expertise when it comes to creating beautiful public spaces in the heart of the city.
