In-N-Out is awful! I never understood why people like their burgers. There are so many good burger places in the city.. So why would even go to In-N-Out?

Sorry, O4kl4nd, unless you're old and incredibly resistant to generational change, In-n-Out hasn't been "pure SoCal" for about 20 years. They're all over NorCal, Nevada, and Arizona, and judging by how packed they all are, all the time, I'd say they're squarely a "west coast" thing now. That being said, I think of them as more "suburban San Ramon" than "urban San Francisco." I'd also take it off the list, but for that reason. You just can't argue with a couple dozen successful Bay Area locations and say they don't belong here after that many years.

Andy, I know people who hate In N Out; I happen to love them -- for what they are. There are better burgers to be had, but I don't think there are better "fast food" burgers. Everything is made fresh and never frozen, and they just taste good. But, I'm always dying to find more suggestions. What burger joints do you recommend in or out of the City?

There's nothing quintessentially San Franciscan about a fast food chain that started in SoCal. I don't think In-N-Out is terrible or anything, it just reminds me of SoCal since that's the first place I ever had it, and there are near practically every freeway on ramp.

Super Duper near the Castro is the best I've had in SF
True Burger in Oakland near Uptown is the best I've had in Oakland

I like my burgers to taste homemade, so that's why In-N-Out has always been a bit overrated to me.
