We may be moving to SF and I will be going to school...But I will also need to earn a living. I have a lot of experience working as a construction laborer and housepainter, with some rough carpentry skills. Is there a decent amount of non-union, small scale residential construction going on? Rehabs and the like. I wonder if I'll have difficulty finding work.

Well seeing as how you will be competing with thousands of other out of work construction laborers you might have an issue. Those that I see getting hired know someone or know someone who knows someone that needs unlicensed but skilled labor.

Are you bilingual?

If you are persistent enough and willing to take a no a thousand times before someone gives you a shot then you might be able to find something.

Good luck your going to need it.

There is a THOUSANDS, if not tens of thousands of non-union folks out there doing this kind of work and the money can be big--it's a matter of getting your name out there and networking.

Good luck.
