Just wondering if anyone has noticed any sort of recent improvement in the job market, in jobs like retail (department stores), cafes, restaurants, etc.; in office work, like receptionists and office administration; non- profits; after-school education programs? I'm actually aspiring to work in an entry-level position in publishing, as an editorial assistant, but I very highly doubt that with my complete lack of experience in this area, except for some freelance writing gigs, I'll get hired.

I have a degree in English, am 26 years old, with a varied work history - human resources, retail, teaching english in thailand, office work - with nothing for more than one year.

I'm desperately trying to get to san fran, as right now I live where I know NO ONE, and have 5,000 which I have painstakingly saved up for over a year while living in complete isolation.

The issue of discrimination against the unemployed still seems to be prominent. This is causing ongoing misery for many.

SF created 3,000 new jobs in the last quarter; if I remember the report correctly. It's a drop in the bucket but at least it's something.

As to your particular field of interest, I'll leave it for someone who knows that industry better than I do.

One thing to note is that rent is expected to raise even further next summer. If you want to move here, plan accordingly.

As someone who is currently job hunting in SF right now, I can tell you that there are a lot of jobs, but they are mostly for high-skilled people in the tech world. It's hard to get jobs in publishing even in a good economy, and there aren't a lot of them in SF. I would go to NYC if you are serious about the field, since they have by far the largest amount of jobs in publishing.

Thanks for the help! I have friends in SF doing well in the tech industry, but I am looking more at retail/food service, non-profits, and after school tutoring/daycare programs....I might apply for a few jobs in editing, but I would never count on it in a place as saturated with talent as San Fran!

Luckily I am not unemployed, I have a job here, but there will be discrimination against me anyways because I am applying from Long Beach. I have a San Francisco address on my resume and cover letter, but my current job is clearly in Long Beach. I have stated on job apps that I am working my last few weeks here and am moving up to the address listed within a week or two, otherwise I do not mention the discrepancy between address and current job.
