I work from home so I don't need to be anywhere but I was told to stay near downtown as the place to be for a bachelor single guy. So yeah, anywhere near downtown but not across the water. I am not sure of these places and their names but really location is not that important as long as it's safe and decent. I can go up to $3,000 for furnished short term room which is more permanent with option of extending beyond 1-2 months. With sublets I'm just going to have to move again in 1-2 months and I don't want that.

Ok, I get you. I didn't know you might need to extend the stay. I heard downtown gets sleazy at night, and there's really not much restaurant and club action happening, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Not many people live "downtown," which is the Financial District. The downtown-ish residential section is the Tenderloin, which along with the bad side of the Mission District are not at all safe. There's a ton to do there for a single person (great dive bars, clubs, concerts), but not where most people would choose to live.

Best places would be Mission Guerrero and east into Castro, Haight-Ashbury, NoPa or Hayes Valley if you want it a bit more quite -- younger, a bit more edgy (hippies, gays, creative types); Nob Hill, Russian Hill, North Beach -- more affluent, upscale, mainstream; Marina, Cow Hollow -- 30s and 40s yuppies, boutiques, wine bars, fancy restaurants; Inner Richmond/Sunset -- Because spending all your money on rent sucks, plus the food and bars are cheaper, if you need to get to the expensive side buses run along Geary and Judah pretty much all night.
