Tampa and SD don't have much in common either. Although parts of southern California look a little like Florida, they don't feel like Florida - different breed of people.

The point was not that SD and Tampa are alike in a pure sense but that they are more alike than Tampa is to SF. They're both typical sunbelt cities. San Francisco for all intents and purposes is the southern most "northern" city.

Tampa and Central Florida is still more the deep south than it is South Beach. Very "southern" culture, where people love to go fishing and hunting etc. Culturally, Tampa is more like Mobile, Alabama than it is like Miami. That and there are a crap ton of elderly people there. Much moreso than SD.

Having lived in both I find no similarities. Tampa area is totally car dependent and not very urban.
