mod cut back in uniform-standards-land, Oakland's improvement is very impressive.

Oakland Unemployment Rate(CA State EDD)
2010 16.9%
2011 15.0%
2012 13.1%

According to the Census Bureau, Oakland's rate in 2011 was 12.3%
and would definitely be lower now in 2012.

Anyway, the Census puts things into perspective.

It all depends on who we're talking about:
Unemployment Rate for Persons Below Poverty Level: 33.3%

Its worth pointing out that the equivalent rate for poor people in Long Beach, Sacramento
and Fresno are all similar to Oakland's , if not higher.

Anyway, Just perusing this thread:

They said that Oakland, not other similarly sized cities, is disproportionately dependent on welfare dollars-PROVEN FALSE.

They said that Oakland is not attracting Venture Capital-PROVEN FALSE.

They said that Oakland's unemployment rate is getting worse-PROVEN FALSE.

They said that Oakland is operating under a budget deficit implying mismanagement-PROVEN FALSE.

They said that Oakland's schools are doing particularly bad compared to other urban districts-PROVEN FALSE.

They said that people wont spend $400,000 for homes in Oakand because of the schools-PROVEN FALSE.

Furthermore, when pressed to explain how eating out and enjoying the city's amenities translates into 'burying our heads in the sand' with respect to crime, ZERO exampes have been given proving that this is indeed the case or even plausible.

Its all been quite illuminating and amusing.

I thought it was proven quite true that Oakland's schools do worse than other urban school districts.

I appreciate the holiday themed, festive colors but you have clearly proved that Oakland, mod cut is actually in the same score range(700-800) as every other large California City.

I am almost tempted to rep you for proving that quite succintly. Almost.

LAUSD takes lots of criticisms for their schools, and a huge budget deficit. I'm not sure being compared to L.A is such a great thing. S.F also gets criticism for its schools by people from Oakland, but as you can see, on average, their base score is 70 points higher which is truly telling.

SF has a ton more money than Oakland. So does SJ and SD.

What were Oakland's API scores a few years ago? I seem to remember them being much worse...

Well S.F and San Diego simply commit money where it's needed. Studies have shown, children who don't drop out of school are less likely to become career criminals.

Oakland so far has not only diverted funds from schools but also laid off 200+ officers in the past 4 years. Yet people think the budget is "fixed" in Oakland.

Who said anything was fixed?

Fixing and fixed aren't the same thing
