Hello!

This next fall I'll be beginning graduate studies in Davis while my fiancee has a job in Foster City. We're searching for places to live to minimize both of our commutes and would appreciate any input you have to offer.

So far, living in Martinez seems like the best option where I could Amtrak to Davis and she could drive to Foster City but we're not very familiar with the bay area. Any advice on best routes to minimize commutes, places to live, or public transportation alternatives would be must welcome and helpful!

If your fiancee will be working regular hours (driving during rush hours), you'd be much better off living right near either the Downtown Oakland, Emeryville, or Berkeley amtrak stations. Traffic can be absolutely awful, at least the extra 20 minutes or so you would spend on the train each way can be spent reading a book or studying, whereas your fiancee will be tearing her hair out on the freeway.

Living near the Emeryville station would give you a 1:22 train ride, and your partner will probably have a little over an hour drive. Consider buying yourself a nice folding bicycle to get to/from the station quicker

Yeah I wouldn't recommend Martinez at all either as its too far from Foster City. Oakland/Berkeley/Emeryville is a good mid point. Or if you want a happier fiancée/wife Fremont or Hayward would be much better for the commute to Foster City.

I'm waiting for the thread asking for halfway points between San Francisco and Reno. I know someday it will come.

This is a horrible commute. You guys should just rent small studios in each city and visit each other on the weekend.

By the way, there was a thread last week describing an extremely similar situation. Read through this one as well.

Half way between Davis and Cupertino?
