You might want to check out Alameda. I think it has more character, has a nice farmer's market, and is really safe, even though close to Oakland. I'd move to Alameda in a heartbeat. Though I don't think there is a BART station in Alameda.

I grew up in San Leandro, went to high school in Hayward. Been a long time since I've been there, but they don't have bad reputations, like Oakland or Richmond, as far as crime goes.

Worst case scenario, you sign a year lease and decide to move in a year. Not the end of the world. Move where commuting will be convenient. That's the one thing that can make you sorry you moved here. If your commute isn't bad, you will probably love it here.

How is the area around downtown Hayward bart? There are large new condo developments there but not sure how the area is in terms of safety! Also is the air quality poor there because the extreme heavy traffic and industries?

The area around Downtown Bart in Hayward is not the greatest I believe the condos there are all in gated communities and I have been in one of the communities and there is a security guard on duty 24/7 I believe. The condo I was in was pretty nice it had a large tandem garage with a laundry area and storage and there were two stories and a loft.

I honestly can't think of one good reason why someone would choose Hayward over San Leandro, aside from cheaper rent, or maybe wanting to be a few minutes closer to San Jose or San Mateo.

San Leandro is actually really nice with a lot going for it. What redeeming qualities does Hayward have again?
