My husband and I have two boys and are looking for a new home outside of the City. Good public schools are a priority. In no particular order we are considering Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Piedmont, Orinda, Lafayette, San Carlos and Belmont.

We are a two dad family, and I'm wondering if anyone had thoughts about the lack of diversity in the Marin, East Bay, or Peninsula towns we are considering. My co-workers are saying that our family would be no big deal in any these communities but I thought it would be interesting to get feedback from others.

Thanks in advance!

Your coworkers are right...it's the Bay Area! We have all kinds of people and families here. I'm in Lafayette and many of the folks moving to the area are often from San Francisco, like myself. Nobody really bats an eye over stuff like this anymore. Schools here are wonderful as well as some of the other towns you've mentioned. The only real lack of diversity in any of these communities would be from an economic standpoint.

You should be fine in any of those areas. As noted, the big issue is the high cost of living for these communities.

Alameda is a good place too for same sex couples and their families. The schools are good and it's close to SF. I agree with the other posters that it's the Bay Area; you should be fine almost anywhere.

In my completely biased unsubstantiated personal opinion, Piedmont is going to be the most comfortable of the communities you've listed, and Lafayette/Orinda will likely be the least comfortable. This is the bay though, so when I say "least comfortable," attitudes are still worlds ahead of other parts of the country.

The OP asked a very political question. I don't see how a political answer is OT. This is getting ridiculous. I'll find a new place to spend my time.

I lived in the larkspur/kentfield area of Marin for 5 yrs (2-mom family). I really don't think you'll have any issues with discrimination/lack of acceptance from people because you are a 2-dad family. However, there aren't that many 2-mom families in Marin (unlike my impression of Berkeley or other east bay communities), and we never met a 2-dad family. If you like the area, go for it.

I agree with Squirl -- plenty of 2 dad couples in Moraga.
