What is the average for a 1bd apt in Fremont close to the BART station? I have been told it will be around $1800-1900/mo. which I find shocking compared to rents in Orange County, CA where 1 bd is around $1300-1500/mo depending on the particular apartment and location. In addition I didn't think Fremont was a really good neighborhood...why are rents so high?

Sounds about right. Though if you look hard you can probably find something around $1,600. Hint: rent is cheaper if you live further from BART. Everybody wants to live close to BART.

Welcome to SF Bay.

Btw, what makes you say Fremont isn't a good neighborhood?

Fremont has, generally, really good schools. You are paying for living in a good school district.

Fremont is actually one of the more desirable cities in Alameda county. Rents are high because it's a nicely maintained and well-managed city that's in a good central location to most parts of the Bay Area. One of the most affluent zip codes in the country, 94539, is in Fremont as well. Fremont also has good to great schools.

I'd say that the prices you mentioned sound about right. Rents have gone up quite a bit over the last few years, but it is definitely possible to find something cheaper if you're patient.

What is the cheapest I should expect to pay for a decent apartment within 15 minutes walking distance from the BART? Can I expect to find something within $1400 or am I dreaming?

That's high for Fremont. I've been watching Fremont rents lately, and I can get a 3-bedroom house near the BART station for between $2100 and $2500. Have you looked at Craigslist, OP. It only takes a couple of minutes. It's a lot faster than posting on a forum and waiting for responses.

If you want a bit cheaper, look at the next town over in Hayward. You can get a nice apartment in the hills for 1350.

Fremont is expensive (but not that expensive) because it is both (1) a Silicon Valley bedroom community and (2) a relatively well-run family-friendly city with a BART station. If BART access is your concern, as opposed to being near Silicon Valley, there is no reason why you shouldn't consider the better parts of Union City, Hayward, etc.

Some apartment complexes managers told me that Fremont went up in prices recently because of Tesla and Seagate.
Fremont is not only bedroom community but also industrial center.
