And I never said SF is perfect, only that it's more perfect than most places, most certainly more perfect than Phoenix by a mile or two. I mean, really that goes without saying.

Some people can be quite silly, too.

I live in a very expensive area, as well, and people leave daily because of it. More and more of the recent college grads aren't staying, either.

Politics or not ( and I'm fairly "blue" in orientation). it's not much of a reason to hang around when there are more reasonable alternatives. Any large city has the capacity to have significant amounts of culture, however you choose to define it.

Two responses:
1. There is, quite frankly, especially for those of us who live in and love SF, no "reasonable alternative".
2. The more people who DO choose to leave - the better, IMHO.

Well, unlike you, I dont sit around passing judgement on how other people spend their money as it's largely none of my business. And generally, I wouldnt call a home purchase "silly" just because of the dollar amount they spent. ijs.

To me, overpaying for real estate or rent is not very sophisticated or smart. I love San Francisco, and I visit often, but I couldn't justify my getting reamed just to be able to live in the City. It's a picturesque city no doubt, but it's not so picturesque or urbane or cosmopolitan to justify paying what it costs to live there. But I suspect the more snobby folks are of the variety who want to overpay for things as a way of flaunting their socio-economic clout! 'Look how much rent I pay in San Francisco -- LOOK, LOOK AT ME!' Lol. I guess living in SF is the equivalent of sporting a Prada purse and driving a Beemer!
People.

And I'm not praising Phoenix, either. I hate heat, and I'm not a desert person, so Phoenix (or any desert town) is off my radar. But Flagstaff and Sedona are nice.

You know what? I agree with you. I think San Francisco is a lot better than Phoenix. I actually like San Francisco. It's just you seem to posses that insufferable, smug, San Francisco attitude that many people talk about. So I wanted to humble you a little bit. I also think it's cute that you think SF can compare with New York.

Well, Anthony - I'm a recently retired blue-collar worker with a high-school GED equivalency diploma. That's it. No Prada purse. No Beemer ('91 Toyota pickup with 265,000 miles - in really nice shape though ). Been here since 1966. Love it still. If people love the City's dynamic and ambiance, and are willing to pay, they're not getting "reamed". They're buying what they like.

very interesting read.

Great book, but then I know the author which makes me prejudiced. He hit on the well-knowns associated with the city for those not from this area. The headlines so to speak.

I don't understand the comparison between Phoenix and SF. Two entirely different places. Although I live here and have for many years, my times spent in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas, not to mention Carefree, have been delightful. I am not for the desert, even when in bloom, nor the ocean, but love the Lake Tahoe area with its forests and less people congestion.

SF (and most of the Bay Area) is/are considered "sanctuary cities," which drives me nuts. At least Arizona's Jan Brewer put her foot down -- or tried to -- on illegal aliens. Kudos to Sheriff Joe.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. Both areas have their good points, and for different reasons.
