I came across this rehab guide from the Oakland Planning Commission in the 70s. Covers the main architecture styles in Oakland (and of course rehab tips!)

Interesting stuff:
Rehab Right: How to Rehabilitate Your Oakland House - Oakland Wiki

What a lovely book! (Too bad the Tunnel Fire burned many of the best examples of each style, since the fire destroyed an affluent part of the city.) This is a valuable resource even 40 years later. Thanks!

I loved that book. I donated my copy to the library (along with hundreds of other books) when I left Oakland and retired to VA but I was tempted to keep it just because I liked it so much but figured that someone might actually use it.

Amazing. I now know I've been calling some houses Victorians when they're Italiantes... Incredibly jealous about the home price that they put in there for budgeting... $18,000 would be around $80,000 in today's money.

"Italianate" is a type of Victorian style. The major headings for architectural styles are Victorian, Colonial Revival, First Bay Tradition, Period Revival, All-American Ranch. Then there are several distinct styles within those movements.

I bought a copy of that book last year at an SFPL sale...fantastic find.

I was impressed that our local governments had the wherewithal and foresight to prepare and print such a guide back then. Would that they did now.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of Oakland as a place to live (for me), I have always loved the architecture. It's such an interesting city, visually. There are no cookie cutter developments --that I've ever seen, anyway.

I think this is why the East Bay and SF have so much more charm than the suburbs. You can tell the towns that were developed much later, because they are all about sprawling, cookie cutter housing developments, at least all around their old towns - if they even kept the old downtowns.

Visually, I much much much prefer Oakland to Santa Clara, for instance. No comparison whatsoever.

To the above, if I could afford a house in Trestle Glen or Rockridge or Grand Lake, I would just stay there forever.

Interesting reading... I've lived in several of the types illustrated.

Found the section on securing your home very interesting... it says to use a twin cylinder deadbolt lock...

I remember as a kid Oakland neighborhood watch had a campaign that every home needed double cylinder deadbolts... still have the OPD booklet as proof.

Fast forward to now and this is a serious code violation and must be abated immediately if inspected.

I know -- but I love my double cylinder deadbolts. But my keys are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS in the lock, when the door is locked.

Not to mention every room in my house has a window that is easily broken out. All sorts of ways to escape.
