This coming storm is supposed to be really bad. It's basically as if the earth said; "let's take an east coast storm and put it on the west coast just for sh*ts and giggles".

I'm thinking driving safely in heavy rain is an oxymoron.

I'm originally from NJ but live in AZ now.

My coworkers in the Bay Area are all planning to work from home tomorrow due to the weather, so I asked one what kind of weather they are getting. He told me 3 inches of rain and 35 mph winds.

I thought...."meh....back home that's a medium strength Nor'Easter. Not really a big deal"

But I guess it is in Cali.

I know here in AZ, that would be like a biblical flood

People do it all the time. Hell, I remember driving in some great storms in Texas where you have a split second of visibility between swings of the wiper blade and literal waves of water on the windshield. And people still drive 80 on the freeway. It's really not that big a deal if you do it all the time (it's actually safer than a light rain with all the oils on the road) and know what you're doing. I'm actually a bit curious about this storm to see what is considered bad to you folk. I'll probably be a bit amused.
Of course, drainage is more important than volume of water. That's the real concern here.

Until rain is parallel to the ground and soak my entire leg only one side within 3 seconds of walking outside I don't consider anything here to be a real storm.
Looking forward to it. Leaving my umbrella at home to tempt fate

Good luck my friends!

I used to live in Florida and sometimes in the summer you get flash storms that only last around 30 minutes, but during those 30 minutes, visibility can literally end at the car in front of you. People have experience driving under those conditions, so it's not a big deal, but if that were to happen here, it could be a bit scary. I have no problem driving in the snow in Alaska, but if it were to snow in Las Vegas, you would see crash after crash because most people have no experience driving under those conditions. Be safe everyone!

Experience a Nor'easter in NY, a hurricane in Miami, a tornado in Oklahoma or a serious thunder and lightning storm in Texas, and the panic over rain in the Bay Area will seem rather cute.

I remember that. Fun times driving on I-95 with wipers going as fast as they can, me driving 5-10 mph, and still not being able to see the road. One thing I notice people in CA don't do enough is turn on their lights during rain. I need to see your rear lights, people!
