We are a family of three considering a move to California. We took a Roadtrip last week in order to check out some places. My husbands work will be in South San Fran so we liked Half moon Bay and Pacifica as possible places to move to. But when looking at the property pages we realized that the rents are absolutely astronomus in the area - any suggestion for alternative places? Nearby, family friendly, good schools, bit of nightlife and most of all affordable? My husband would commute into South san Fran a couple of times a week. It seems a lot of readers here are from the area so hopefully someone will be able to give valuable input. Any information will be much appreciated. We are at the start of our planning and are open to any suggestions/input etc. Thanks in advance.

Are you saying Half Moon Bay is unaffordable? There are no cheaper alternatives within commuting distance. People do live farther away and put up with very long commutes, but it's not recommended. Have you looked at the other beach communities to the immediate south of Pacifica?

OP, just so you know, we get a lot of people posting that they want to live in the Bay Area or California in general, and they have a list of amenities they want, but they can't afford the rents/real estate. There's no hidden community of cheap rents, great nightlife, good schools, walkable shopping and beach access. If you want to live in the area and your income won't cover it, you either have to make adjustments (get an extra half-time job or set up a home business, or get a smaller living space than you wanted), or give up the dream and look elsewhere. That's the reality.

Default Pacifica is weird

No other way to put it.
Pacifica is just plain ... WEIRD.

Avoid it.
Drugs, weed, booze ... high rates of domestic violence combines for some screwed up kids.

What's your budget - the maximum you will pay for rent. And what size apartment.

This does not match my experience or view of Pacifica. But it does sound like veganwriter has some stories to tell.

Do they ever get sun? I was told both these areas always have fog.

The south end of Pacifica gets more sun. That's also where the big park is, with hiking trails.

Are they drivable to SSF in work hour traffic? I don't mind driving up to an hour. I may take a job there.

Depending upon where you’re coming from in Pacifica and where you’re going to in SSF, using Sharp Park Road (in Pacifica) and Westborough Blvd (in SSF), it’s 6 miles and roughly 15 minutes to the farthest point in SSF. A very short drive.

The sun does come out….and when it does Pacifica is beautiful! Amazing views.
