Am a software engineer and my wife is getting a prof job at CSU East Bay. Where can we live that's convenient to CSUEB and is safe? We have a daughter and would need at least 3 bed and 2 bath. How much should we be looking to spend?

I am assuming I will get a job somewhere in the Bay area.

Coincidentally,
Hayward is centrally located to most of the Bay Area so you are in a good position as far as looking for a job that wont be too much of a hassle getting to any major employment center and the immediate area above the campus are really nice and seem very safe.

Castro Valley, next door, is a relatively nice area, and San Leandro to the north also has very good areas. South of Hayward, the Fremont-Newark-Union City areas offer lots of favorable options too.

After that,
you may even want to consider San Ramon, Dublin or Pleasanton on the other side of the East Bay Hills. Those towns have excellent schools, have low crime and is still a relatively easy commute to the school. Plus this area has lots of high profile employers located in various suburban office parks.

All of the above mentioned cities except San Ramon I think Newark have BART stations.
