I will be making around 77k working at a hospital in the Bay area. I have a car and I have two cats. I either want to live in the Dale City, Richmond, or next to the VA hospital.
Here's the monthly budget I plan to abide by:

Rent/UTl: 1,100
Car: 180
Insurance: 90
Phone: 110
Sudent loan:75
Credit card: 50
Food: 300

This totals to around 1905 and I will be able to save what I have leftover. My friends are telling me this is a dumb mistake, but I wanted to get consulting from this site to see if this is realistically possible?

Your rent is a wee bit optimistic unless you have 5 room mates

You will need a roommate or roommates. Just noticed you are including utils in the 1100. You are way off. Sorry.
Bad move.

With roommates, spending 1100 on rent, you will survive fine but you'll feel poor. Yep, you actually will. You don't have a grasp of how expensive the area is in all dimensions. Also, pets make getting rentals much, much more difficult. I'd reconsider this move.

sfbay.craigslist.org is where you should search for rentals.

Exactly. You can only afford a room in a shared place on your budget, and with rare exception--in the East Bay, not SF. If you're ok with that, then fine. Enjoy.

Yup. Most of those at that price will be in the East Bay. Or toward the south of SF.

Why don't you share the ad with us for some input ?

With a salary of $77K, assuming health benefits, you should be able to increase your rental budget by a few hundred. $77K = $6,400 a month income. 1/3 of your gross income as a rule of thumb in regard to rent = approx. $2,140.
