My son is considering a job in San Lorenzo and is looking into affordable living options within commuting distance to his work. We are not familiar with the area but understand that monthly rents can be extremely high. We are very concerned that he live in an area that is safe. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Please include neighborhoods as well as specific apartment complexes, homeshares or residence clubs (dormitory living). The maximum rent he could afford would be approximately $900 to $1100 per month. Is it possible to find anything in a safe area for this price range?

Why not try and rent a room in San Lorenzo. It is a nice and safe town.

Thanks for the reply. Is San Lorenzo an area where young professionals live? If not, do you have more suggestions? Thanks again!

San Lorenzo is a bedroom community. It is a nice area, especially for young families. If you are looking for all the trendy things like "walkability" and hipster toast bars then you should look at Oakland.

OP, of course, most people on the forum will claim the following:

Quote:
Living with roommates does not count as living. It is not a livable situation. If you can accept it, that means you're immature and childish.

If you can't afford a single family home on a large plot of land in which you own the land, you are not living.

Condos are not livable either.

It MUST be a single family home. You must OWN the single family home. Renting is NOT living.

For any given region, if you can't afford to own a single family home in an excellent school district, you're living in poverty.
Complete nonsense, of course, but eventually people will post words to that effect.

For those of us who make under 100k, what we do is rent rooms inside of apartments/condos. The best resource to find such rentals is Craigslist.

I agree with shooting4life that between San Lorenzo and Oakland, the latter is probably the more desirable place for young singles.

How does your son intend to get to work? Transit? Driving?

I work in San Lorenzo, most likely on the same street that he would be working. Many of the family-oriented employees at our facility commute from Tracy, Modesto and Stockton, which means that they spend most of their income on driving. Those that are closer, in places like Oakland and Hayward, it's a good bet they spend most of their income on housing unless they have a sweetheart Section 8 deal (many do).

On the kind of budget you are talking about, your son would be hard pressed to find any tenable situation moving out here right now. An apartment for $1100 would have been dumpy at best 10 years ago, and costs are substantially higher at present.

$1100 = room for rent pretty much in all of the Bay Area these days (at minimum, in more pricey parts, such as SF, to have a private room for rent is more like ~$1500).

Once again you guys demonstrate how important my voice is on this forum.

1100 a minimum. lmao.

1100 would be a very nice room. You can go a lot cheaper than that:

Room for rent- SAN LORENZO

Room for Rent

room for rent

%%% ROOM AVAILABLE NEAR BAYFAIR BART, MOVE IN READY!

Roommate ASAP, Fully furnished bedroom with shared bathroom 750$ only

That's what I found fairly close...if we include Oakland or Fremont, we would have a lot more options.
