Anyone used HotPads before? Just came across them. Unlike, say, Roomster, they seem legit, but that's just based upon a quick cursory browse. It looks like on HotPads it's not so much about scams, but broker fees or move-in specials that expire after a couple of months.

Hotpads is good and as you note has legit listings. It definitely skews towards corporately-managed buildings (more expensive), and as such misses a lot of Bay Area housing since so much of the Bay Area's housing market is driven largely by mom-and-pops and small property managed units (especially true in the City, in Oakland, and in Berkeley)...but, by doing so, you eliminate a lot of the scam listings.
