Hi,

We will be moving to bay area soon. My job is in Financial District of San Francisco. My wife and 6-year old daughter will also move with me.

After some searching craigslist, I quickly realized I can't afford rents in San Francisco. I am looking for nearby cities with family-friendly neighborhoods. Good schools, safe neighborhoods are a priority. For commute, as long as ride is comfortable, I am fine with 40-50 minutes commute time. We are mainly looking out for family neighborhoods with good schools, parks, etc. We love to celebrate festivals so that could be an added bonus. Which are the good cities/neighborhoods we should consider? In terms of rent, I think we will be able to afford till 2500/month.

I have been considering Fremont and Dublin primarily so far. Main problem seems to be that parking at BART can be troublesome. Getting an apartment close to BART station can be expensive. I don't want to miss out on other options as well.

Kindly suggest.

Check out Albany, El Cerrito, East Richmond Heights & El Sobrante. Very diverse( including Indians), suburban but still has lots of great options for dining and entertainment( referring to Albany and El Cerrito)The good thing about your child's age is that it's easier to find a great elementary school than a great high school. From Albany and El Cerrito you also have the option of casual carpooling to The City and in case you didnt know, AC Transit offers nice express buses from all over the East Bay to Downtown SF. Oh and the weather in the areas I mentioned is great.

Anyhow, just a few suggestions. Good luck.

This. You don't have to go all the way out to Dublin. Albany, El Cerrito and Richmond have BART stations, and there are commuter buses, too, as Montclair pointed out. These areas have lower rents than Berkeley and Oakland, and are good, family areas on the Bay.

We have a large Indian presence in Sunnyvale, which is a CalTrain ride to south of Market.

Thank you, yes, these seem like decent options. Will check out

Are CalTrains reliable for office commute - specially if working hours aren't always fixed?

Yes definitely. I've commuted by CalTrain when I lived up in SF and worked in Mountain View. Many commute on it today.

Which areas of Oakland are good for family? Is it completely out of budget?

Also, we like living in a separate house as opposed to an apartment. Is that feasible in these areas?

El Sobrante and Fremont are both areas with large Indian populations.
