Zuni cafe
Locals sometimes find it overrated (although not as overrated as Chez Panisse), but I love it. Especially the roast chicken for two with bread salad. I think if you are in SF, you should try California cuisine.

Tartine. delicious patisserie on 18th and Guerrero. Try the gougeres or the orange-infused morning bun. The line is long and annoying, but worth the wait.

I fully concur with the suggestions for Swan oyster, slanted door, and ti cous.

I'm putting in another reminder to try Dottie's for brunch... it's AMAZING! I went this morning and couldn't have had a better meal and warm atmosphere. It made the 35 min wait seem like nothing. Also, if you want a snack, you have to get a cupcake from Kara's Kupcakes near Lombard and Scott.

Here's another one, a bit more adventurous. If you have ever liked some of those Halal Indo/Pakistani places in Lower Manhattan, our local equivalent is Shalimar. It's on the edge of the Tenderloin, but getting there from downtown is not too bad - it is after all on the edge not in the middle. I believe it's on Jones, between Geary and O'Farrell, IIRC. Google it, you'll find it.
