I am a single mom moving to the San Francisco area because I will be pursuing my masters at the Academy of Art soon and would like to know what would be the best areas for me to live considering I have a kid. Price, safety and transportation accessibility are priorities.

So far I see the lowest prices are to be in Oakland but I hear mixed reviews when it comes to the safety factor. Help!

That's tough. On the one hand, Oakland is home to a great many artists, particularly in north Oakland on the Emeryville border. But those neighborhoods are gritty at best, dangerous at worst. San Mateo county might be too sterile for you - it is good for kids though, so as a piano instructor that's where I choose to live. Berkeley might be the best of all worlds.

What price are you looking at? Are you buying or renting? Do you want suburbs, city, rural, or something in between one of those two? Where are you moving from? Are you coming out to tour the area before you move?

Alameda gets my vote, close enough, but it can seem a world away!

I should write slogans for the chamber of commerce, lol

Smile alameda you are so right!

My wife and I just relocated from Massachusetts to Alameda on Shoreline Drive and so far we are enjoying the experience. Very close to shopping, parks, Oakland and San Francisco. People seem friendly. I hope that this honeymoon lasts awhile
