Since it's foggy is direct sunshine rare?

Does the fog make the air more refreshing?

The sun shines 66% of the time on average on the sunny (bay) side of the city. It shines 58% of the time on the foggy (ocean) side of town.

The fog does make the air more refreshing...especially if you are coming from somewhere hot. However, some people do find the fog and nagging wind annoying if they have to live in it every day.

By way of comparison, the sun shines:

58% of the time in New York and Boston
63% of the time in Jacksonville, Florida
85% of the time in Phoenix
78% of the time in Sacramento
73% of the time in downtown Los Angeles
69% of the time in Denver
47% of the time at the Seattle Airport
68% of the time in San Diego
60% of the time in Kansas City
54% of the time in Chicago

How strong are the winds? What is the percentage of windy days?

I agree with this statement. When I first moved to San Francisco I thought the fog was a great change from the weather in Florida and visually "interesting" something you'd see in a classic horror movie. However, after awhile it gets depressing and a bit annoying when everywhere around you has sunny weather, but you're hidden in a layer of fog. The winter is cold and foggy, you get into spring and the weather starts to get warm and the fog starts to dissappear and then the summer comes and the fog and wind comes back. The weather in fall is amazing though!

Depends on how you define windy. The average wind speed is 10.6 MPH in San Francisco. That is above average, but it is not among the windiest places in the US. It is windier (and there is more fog) in July and August than in Winter.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it. I live in San Jose. Oh hot days in July and on cold winter nights, I wish I lived in SF. But then there are other days in the middle of July when it's in the low 60s for the high. Uggh. I think I'd find that depressing. Overall, I like SJ's weather better, although I wish summers averaged a few degrees cooler.

Beware of "fog burn!"

Fog does almost nothing to stop UV ...

SF gets plenty of sunshine. I don't know whats up with this myth that it gets little sunlight because of fog. Come on people, this isn't Seattle. SF gets more sunlight than NYC and Dallas.
