I am not familiar with the San Francisco area and my hubby is more than likely being sent to san quentin for work. We don't know where to try to settle the family we have kids from pre-k to highschool and want them in good schools and safe places without him having to commute for two hours!!! I am a full time college student so that has to be considered too? Where can we go? Any advice we have though about going North of there?

Since San Quentin is North Bay, San Rafael comes immediately to mind. It's not the Cheapest place in the Bay Area but it's not the most expensive by a long shot. Most of the North Bay is nice with what I consider pretty decent weather. I'm kind of partial to Mill Valley myself. If you're into the outdoors, the North Bay puts you right where you want to be.

I would look at Novato as well as possibly Petaluma.

when you say college student would that be community or university? That might also make somewhat of a difference.
