Hey all -

I am relocating to Mountain View this August to start a job with Google. I am looking for a place close to Google (w/i a few miles) and I plan to bike commute. Biking distance to downtown would be nice too. Safe area of course. Looking for 2br, preferably with washer and dryer. Budget is 2500 - 2800 basically.

I am thinking of focusing my search on the Whisman Station area. The location seems ideal (close to downtown, close to Stevens Creek trail for bike commute). When I was out there, it seemed like a good nice area. And between the Central Park at Whisman Station apartments and nearby condos, there seems to be some options.

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this area!

Archstone MV may be a fall back, as I can cut through the neighborhood over to Stevens Creek trail and it looks like a reasonable complex. Though the no laundry is a negative and I'd rather not live on El Camino... hence my focus on Whisman.

I worked near Whisman and the apartments/condos look fine at least from the outside. The area is safe. There is a VTA light rail stop near there and you can ride up to downtown Mountain View or south all the way down to San Jose. Interactive Light Rail Map

One could get to SJ, but no-one (hyperbole, of course) uses the light rail to do it. The route is simply far too slow for getting much beyond North 1st Street.

No, but its an easy 15 min drive or Caltrain ride to downtown SJ.

From when I was living in the area (up to 2005), there was talk about vapor intrusion in a home that was linked to TCE, but I don't know where that ended up. A google search on whisman station contamination doesn't turn up recent updates either.

EPA Superfund Sites Cause New Toxic Plume Concerns

The south Bay seems to have an affinity for Superfund sites. Two in MV, multiple in San Jose...

I think the TCE issues that arose several years ago in Mountain View are overstated. Corrective action was taken by the developers on the various sites to ensure those don't happen again and you don't hear anything about this anymore. However, various posters on this board like to pull news articles from 10 years ago and employ scare tactics on others.

You say 10 years, but the link was from May of this year.

An "affinity"? The area was previously a toxic waste dump. Be careful.
