Hey everyone. Im looking to move up to San Jose in a year coming up from San Diego b/c my girlfriend is transferring over to SJSU. Shes living with her mom but I would like to have a place for her to come and visit and spend time with me.
I'm really looking for a cheap place when i first get to the city (300-500 a month not including food and utilities and stuff. ive prepared for that already), preferably a studio, and i want to be by myself (so no roommates of any kind). While i search for EMT jobs up there and then make a very good living.

If there is anyone out there who has any ideas please let me know I would really appreciate any advice. cheap neighborhoods, safe neighborhoods. everything. Thanks all!

-Rudy

Only living with roommates. 500 is not enough for studio.

You won't be able to find a studio in that price range. For $300-500/mo, you might be able to rent a single room in someone's house.

I did some quick poking around and I did see some studios near SJSU for $850+/month.

Honestly you are probably looking at close to double that. A quick craigslist search shows some units in the 800-1000 but I am doubting you will find anything for much less than that.

I know that not all neighborhoods around SJSU are nice and that's why they're cheaper. I don't know specifics, but I've seen it posted here.

I rent reallllllly small, very utilitarian studios next to Santa Clara University and I get $1090 for them including utilities. My little studios are comparable in price to the cheaper apts near SJSU but safer area (or so is the feedback I've always received).

Even rooms for rent advertised for SCU students in Santa Clara and north San Jose are going for up to $1000 (master bedrooms in someone's house).

Ouch.

Most of the studios I saw were $1000+, but figured I'd mention the cheaper ones since someone always chimes in on these "rent is surprisingly expensive!" threads to point out a cheaper option in a less safe neighborhood and goes on a mini rant about how you don't need granite countertops.

Also... OP, I don't know how much EMTs make, but you might want to read some of the threads from the past year about the cost of living in the area and whether it is doable on a $60k, $75k salary, etc.

A studio will run you about a grand a month... I rented one near San Jose City College and it was 1,100, I think - with all utilities included.

Also, not sure you'll be making a very good living as an EMT job up here, most of them are privatized, so it's not like a cushy government job you'd get with say SFFD

Honestly, I'm not sure you can even rent a room for $500 these days (forget $300, you couldn't rent a room for that a decade ago), let alone a studio. I paid $580 incl. utilities & my own bathroom for a 10x10 room 8 years ago.

What's with all these $500/month studio posts lately?

Oh right, I forgot: San Jose is a cowtown and thus must be extremely cheap to live here. Ooops...maybe not! :P

This caveat is a crusher. Must be more flexible if one wishes to live in one of the most expensive places in the country.
