My husband just took a new job in San Mateo, but we live in Pasadena. He flies to SFO Monday mornings and to Burbank from San Jose on Thursdays and Fridays (he gets every other Friday off).
He'll be staying with his brother-in-law in SF for the time being but needs to find a room rental somewhere. Any advice? Have looked at airbnb listings although something more long-term would be nice. He has a car.
Are there others in this situation, or blogs for commuters like this?
Thanks!

So he stays up here Mon-Thurs? Have you looked for rooms-for-rent on craigslist? Anywhere in the peninsula would be fine.

There are a lot of SoCal commuters to NorCal and vice versa. I always see some of the same people on the Oakland/San Jose to Burbank flights on Southwest Monday morning and Friday afternoons.

San Mateo itself is a nice place to live and he shouldn't have a problem finding an apartment or room for rent.

Thank you!
We've been looking on craigslist. There are a lot of listings!
Have you had any experience with airbnb?

I've heard of it ... I thought it was for short-term (i.e. vacation) rentals.
I thought you were looking for a longer-term solution.

If you're looking for a steady living situation, Craigslist is the way to go. San Francisco has some protections against sublessors due to the rent control ordinance, but San Mateo should be much easier.

Thanks for the advice.
He's been staying in SF til now and has avoided the morning traffic by arriving in San Mateo by 7:15. He'll keep checking Craigslist for something in San Mateo or Burlingame for the longer term... jaypee is right; airbnb is mainly for night-to-night rooms. We'll keep trying!
Happy Halloween!

You might want to try placing an ad on Craigslist yourselves. I have a friend in Santa Clara who was looking specifically for a commuter to rent a room in her house. She really wanted her apt to herself on the weekends. She fixed up her spare room really nicely with a Murphy bed, etc.

If you run your own ad, and then just use the Craigslist email option to contact you, you can sift through the ads without giving out your personal contact info. I bet there would be a lot of people, like my friend, who would love to rent to a commuter.

Congrats on the job and good luck :-)
