Clarify your question

Any smart kid (or adult) has endless online, free resources to learn to code or trade

Not sure any of these skills are teachable....but all are clearly learnable by self, by iteration, by being a practitioner, by learning from own real-world mistakes

Doubt any smart grad of Stanf CS learned anything from clueless profs who have never done anything practical/monetizable in their lives.....Stanf CS was just a useful credential in an ancient era to obtain a first job, thankfully irrelevant today (like all acad credentials)

Not sure where you are from, but U.S. companies are forbidden by Federal law to offer "volunteer" jobs. Something to do with slave labor, I believe.

Many companies offer internships for college students who are majoring in relevant fields. Some internships are paid, some are not. However, in order to comply with Federal Labor laws, if an internship is unpaid, it has to meet certain rules that make it clear it is a training opportunity, not a "volunteer" job. (U.S. Department of Labor - Wage and Hour Division (WHD) - Fact Sheet)

You can usually find out if a company offers internships by checking their website, or by contacting the company directly. You can also look for internships on sites like Monster.com and Indeed.com. Your college or university career center may also have a list or database of companies that offer internships to students in your field of study. Sometimes college professors may know of internships, or be able to connect students with opportunities. Keep in mind that landing an internship at places like Google or Facebook are very competitive.

Again, I am not sure where you are from, but if you happen to be from outside the U.S. and are not attending college in the U.S., landing an internship can be more complicated as the company will need to sponsor you for a J-1 Visa (see: http://j1visa.state.gov/programs/int...ograms/intern/) If you are an international student attending a U.S. university or college, you can usually do internships under the terms of your existing student visa, but be sure to talk to the international student office at your college before accepting an internship about how it may affect the amount of time you can stay in the U.S. after graduation under OPT.

Good luck!
