Hi!
My husband & I plan to move somewhere near or around Santa Fe next summer in order to be closer to family. We want to rent/lease to own or to rent permanently. Once we move in, we want to stay there.
We are currently homeowners near Annapolis, MD. We have been homeowners in Sacramento Ca.
We have 2 "Aussie Doodle" dogs Bingo & Gizzy.
We are looking for an adobe style home (around 2,000sq.ft.) with a view, a yard or some land for the pups and privacy. We like to garden.
Does anybody know of someone who is thinking of moving away from the Santa Fe area or surrounding area next summer that has a property like the one we are looking for?
Thanks!
Kathryn & Otto

Rent to own is not always a financially advantageous way to do things. With low mortgage rates and some good deals to be had on real estate I would look at a conventional purchase. Find a good local realtor and give them your criteria, come out to visit and see what areas appeal to you.

Would be best to post to the Santa Fe sub forum rather than to the general NM forum.

I'd agree with the sentiment about rent-to-own - sellers don't really like it either, because their house is off the market without a really solid commitment to an ultimate purchase. Given the low interest rate environment now, rents are likely to be higher than mortgages.
Given your criteria, I'd say you have many great options in and around Santa Fe - come take a look!

Another voice here in agreement that rent-to-own is not really a great way to do things. I own a house in SFe that is currently a rental (unfortunately I was afraid to sell it when I relocated to the PNW 7 years ago for fear that I would someday move back to my hometown). I just bought a house in OR and am wishing that the tenants in SFe who have been in the house for over five years now would just finance to buy it. They've said they might be interested in rent to own, but I don't want to carry the financing and would just as soon sell the NM house.

I'd think seriously about renting. A rent-to-own often means putting a down-payment on the table and also only having a portion of your monthly payment going towards paying down the principal. Should you decide not to buy after the agreed-upon time period, then you could forfeit the down payment (if any) and the amount you've paid over the fair market rental price. Why tie yourselves into a home and neighborhood that you might not like in three months or a year down the road? It takes a while to get to know the area, so if you aren't already familiar with our area just find a place to rent and give yourselves some time to scope the place out. I think you'll feel a whole lot better about your decision by doing that.

Okay, seriously urban78? Now you're just promoting your unrelated thread? Are you the Santa Fe Antichrist?

Good approach. I just don't get it--if this person has such a hatred for Santa Fe, it's like...don't live here! Obviously many people still love it! If someone is seriously considering retiring in or moving to Santa Fe, they'll do their research, and they'll find pros and cons like everywhere else.
