So, we sold our house in record time in Upstate NY with two offers on it -- we went for the stronger offer but it requires a much quicker closing than we had originally thought. C'est la vie! We couldn't be happier! We'll be headed down in the 3rd week of May.

Anyway, we are two 45 and 48 year old women coming from Saratoga Springs NY where this past Winter was brutal We are accustomed to a Northeast way of dressing. This will not fit at all. Dull colors, synthetic fabrics (more than cotton), etc. My question is, what should we be looking at bringing and buying once in FL? What should we have on hand so we are not looking so obviously NY?

Advice please! Looking forward to lighter, more casual and colorful clothing.

Shorts, shorts, shorts and T-shirts, cotton or cotton blend is good. It should be getting well into the 80's during the day by then, and there will be a bit of humidity. We were there 2 years ago, the first week in May looking for a house and then again last year to do the walk through for the house we bought just before Memorial Day weekend and it was hot.

The Gulf was warm and wonderful (both times) and the pool where we stayed was a delight. Be sure to bring shoes that you can use to walk on the sand as that time of year, you'll burn your feet without.

Came from the Philly area 2 years ago. I work at home so I don't need "work" clothes. I think I have had long pants on maybe 4 times since then. All my shoes are flipflops. I wear shorts 3/4 of the year and capris the other 1/4. Jersey cotton tops. Hair might be something you haven't considered--in my opinion it either needs to be short enough so as not to be laying on your neck or around your face or long enough to put up, cause in the summer you don't want it hot and hanging and sticking to your face! Don't get me wrong I PREFER summer here over winter. Winter is still too cold even when it only gets down to 40. Well maybe take my comments with a grain of salt if you aren't a hot weather person, as I do see people dressed "warmly" in the winter here. Not me!

For FL wardrobes my best advice is to check out Beall's and Beall's Outlet stores once you get here. They always carry cotton and cotten blend tops, shorts, capris, etc with a tropical vibe. Best selection I've found.

By the way, they carry shorts and swimsuits even during the winter months when all of the chain stores are carrying long sleeve shirts and sweaters.

As long as you have your receipt, they will give a full refund via your original method of purchase (ie cash, credit card). If you don't have a receipt, they follow the same procedure many of the stores have - you get a refund based on the current price of the item. So if it is on clearance or they're having a sale, that's the price they use. And many stores won't give the refund to you in cash, they give it to you on a gift card. Considering the amount of shoplifting that occurs, I do understand their view on refunds without receipts.

Cannot go wrong with khaki in FL.

Say bye bye to socks for most of the year.

Think about a big brimmed hat.

When you get here, shop Bealls, Belks, Walmart. Plan on walking shorts, light tops, sandals. You will need swim shoes for the beach. Walking barefoot on the beaches fine in the morning, not cool (literally) in the afternoon.

We moved here from Syracuse, NY. I got rid of most of my winter clothes, but kept a few. We do get a few cold days occasionally in the winter down here where you might need a jacket, sweater, or long pants. So, don't get rid of all your winter clothes. I also kept a few things for traveling back to Syracuse in case we ever have to go in the winter.

If you have light jackets or button up sweaters or even a few sweatshirts, keep them. I have different wardrobes for the climate down here. In the heat of the summer I wear sundresses, skirts and sleeveless tops, and shorts. Other times when it is a little cooler, 75 degrees and under I wear short sleeve shirts, cotton shirts, shorts, pants, and capris. Capris are a good choice for in between weather or being out in the evening. I always bring a sweater for restaurants and even the mall and stores can be cold. And you will need some long pants every once in awhile.
