I will agree that yes there is a young undercurrent in Sarasota, but they are elitist trust funder types that really arent that open to new people in a social setting. This is my personal experience since moving there when I was 35, which was and still is considered young in Sarasota.

i think if you some digging around you'll find an appropriate number of young and not so young professionals and places where they congregate right here in Sarasota. Anna Maria island could be a great place to live- winters you have a lot of young people coming down in addition to the retirees,etc. If you can afford it, a place around downtown would be terrific.

Google meetup groups in Sarasota. There are young professional groups, kayaking, running, book clubs, networking groups, etc, etc.
Also, look up the electronic edition of the Sarasota Herald Tribune "Ticket" section. The paper version comes out on Thursdays It is loaded with things to do, and that will give you an idea of what's around.
